Video: How to grow cabbages and cauliflowers
The latest in my ‘how to’ video series focusses on brassicas… specifically cabbages and cauliflowers, and how to grow decent ones. As always, apologies to anyone who’s an expert already. Do tell me about any hot tips of your own for brassica success.

Two thumbs up! I particularly enjoyed the plot.

That just about covers it nicely I reckon, I’d just add that brassicas need rich soil so dig in muck or compost at digging time.

Yes – ditto – two more things to add: plant in last year’s bean patch for the nitrogen, or grow clover the previous season and dig in.
Cabbage white butterflies – netting must be fine enough to keep them off too.

very good soilman, also surprised u didnt mention the cabbage white caterpillars – much efficient and devastating than the pigeon i find and have decmiated many a crop on my humble patch.

Great points. Thanks all. In particular the Cabbage White problem, which I most definitely should have mentioned. It tends not to be a problem for me, because my netting is fine enough to exclude the butterflies.

Thanks Irena. Took me ages to animate it, and even then I couldn’t get the head right… but I’m learning!

Hi Soilman, love watching your videos and sharing your trials and tribulations! We got the same challenges over here! My biggest battle with my cabbages were the same as Rampart_Weasel was saying, that dasterdly white cabbage butterfly and the attack of the neon green ‘pillars of consumption! Take care,
