Lousy leeks
OK, so I planted out the seedlings a little late – mid-July, rather than June. But they should have made better growth than this.
I’ve not had a single meal out of them yet. And probably won’t before March.
I blame the grim summer. Anyone else had difficulty with their leeks this time around?
I can top those for crumby leeks! My excuse is that I just ran out of time and energy (after major surgery in August and enforced months of slow recovery)
Can’t remember when they got planted out, then they were swamped by a forest of chickweed! But I expect the slimline leeks will taste pretty good. Can I recommend Leek Vinaigrette – the recipe in ‘What to eat now’ by Valentine Warner is ace 🙂

Yep, leeks are bad in Normandy too this year. I planted out a bunch bought from the market (this is usually an excellent plan) perhaps a little later than usual but not much and they are pathetic. I thought it was just my luck.
We’ve been eating some anyway, as ‘baby’ leeks and using a few to flavour soups with the hope the rest will eventually bulk up a bit but the weather hasn’t been helping much so far this year.

Yes mine are pretty crap too. I only have a few left and they look more like spring onions. They got off to a very bad/late start – I don’t know why and never really caught up. However I will say that they are quite delicious.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. It’s clearly not because I’m a crap gardener. At least, not this time.
