Honey, I’m home!

Spring cauliflower

Look what I picked up on the way home from work!

A freshly picked cauliflower is a thing of beauty and gastronomic delight. They really do taste different fresh. Cauliflower cheese tonight…

When you say, ‘picked up on the way home’ – I take it you mean it is one of your own – from the allotment? Or are you trying to dupe us?

  2. Soilman Says:

No, it’s one of mine, from the allotment. Honest!!

  3. Rampant_Weasel Says:

a fine specimen..is it one of the ones u were watering in the cauli video?

  4. Soilman Says:

    Hi Rampant Weasel

No, those were my autumn caulis last year. This is an over-wintering variety, Walcheren Winter, which I sowed in August and planted out in September last year. It’s come a little earlier than usual – winter caulis normally head in May.

  5. Liz Says:

I am very impressed with this! I have never had any success growing caulis but am going to try again this year.

  6. Soilman Says:

Never give up, Liz! It’s a battle, but a worthwhile one. The sense of achievement when you grow a cauliflower is hard to beat. Many other crops give me more pleasure for their food value, but cauliflowers top the charts for sheer pride and satisfaction every time.

  7. allotment blogger Says:

Oh wow! I am envious. Our caulis are disastrous: the summer ones are always full of caterpillars and the overwintered ones always blow. That is a complete beauty – what’s the secret?

  8. Soilman Says:

Allotment blogger: Wish I knew. Lots of water, lots of manure, lots of netting. Works most of the time. But not all… Goddammit.

  9. Matron Says:

How was it? I’m salivating at the thought!

  10. Soilman Says:

Fantastic, Matron! Unfortunately, I picked two more at the plot last night and now I’m swamped. Cauliflower with everything!!
